I -- pregnant for the first time -- have a few nice articles of baby clothing, and am a bit surprised to notice that even the very nice stuff has large, itchy-looking tags.

Given how irritable _I_ get over an itchy tag, those are getting snipped right out.

But. How useful is it to know the size of baby clothes? Will it be worth my time to do what I was thinking of, viz: using some coloured thread to stitch in a little code so I know the size? Or can you eventually pretty much gauge the size by just looking?

A bit of an odd question, yes. But, Yahoo! Answers is so useful for those odd questions...

It's not too important to know the size of the clothes once you buy it. You get to the point where you just put the clothes on to see if they still fit.

And just so you know, Gerber onsies usually have the tags that are printed on. Also, tags on baby clothes don't usually itch or irritate.

Not an odd question, it's just good preparation.

I'll give you a head's up about infant clothes. Although they say the size they are supposed to fit, it's hardly ever accurate until you get into the 2 and 3T's. The fabric is so small, and has different rates of shrinkage and stretch. It would be a moot point to waste your time with color coding. My three year old, who wears a size 4T, still has a pair of pants labeled for 18 months!!

I wouldn't go tag ripping until your little one arrives, just in case you have to return some clothes. My eight pounder couldn't fit into half of his starter clothes!! Also, before you rip, feel the texture of the tag. The ones that are made of rough fabric or paper can go, but the ones that are made of soft ribbonlike fabric won't bother them a bit. And when you do rip tags, be sure to use a seam ripper to make sure you get all of the scratchy stuff off, but won't tear a hole.

What I would suggest is to group your clothes together by length for a newborn. As your little one grows, the length will be taken long before the girth. The first sign of outgrowing an outfit will be crunched toes if they stretch. From shoulder to toe...that's how you gauge whether an outfit is the right size.

Also, be sure to prewash all new clothes twice and handmedowns once in Dreft or some other baby detergent to reduce the chance of irritation.

Good luck with your little one, and God Bless!

The size is mostly important for when other people are buying your baby clothes... I can gauge it by eye and some of the sizing is off anyway... my 10 month old daugther has a 3 to 6 month sweater that fits her and an 18 month old sweater that is too small... they're really not that helpful. A lot of the gerber onesies and such don't have tags... they just have a iron on patch thing that tells the size.

Don't pay attention to the sizes of the clothes. Dress your baby in whatever will fit him/her.

I went out and got a lot of "Newborn" sized clothes for my first son, he didn't fit into anything when he was born (only 7 pounds). He's also only 10 months old, but nothing sized less than 18 months fit him.

Plus the sizes differ from brand to brand. Newborn with one brand, might be the same size as 3 months with another brand.

My suggestion is don't rip tags out or throw receipts away until after you know whether the clothes will fit the baby or not.

It's not that important to know the size, like someone else said you just try them on to see if they fit. My son's belly was so round that when he was only 23lbs jeans that were size 26 lbs wouldn't fit him. It all depends on your baby. My son is now 7 months old and has been in sz 24months for a month now. Clothes that small don't fit for too long anyways, your baby will probably only wear some articles of clothing a couple of times and then it wont fit anymore. You could even hold the article up to another article to see what size it is without even trying it on your baby.

well..i find that it comes in handy when you go to buy new clothes...if you know that your child is in 3-6mo you can just buy that size with out having to compare using your eye sight...and what if people want to buy somthing for your little bundle of joy..they need to know sizes :) if you are really worried about it cut the tags out in segemnts...like if the baby is in newborn sizes..cut only the newborn size tags out..when he outgrows the NB, put them away and cut the tags out of the 0-3mo..when he grows out of them..put them away and continue to do that through the stages...this way you will know what size he is in
PS:they do make tagless onesies and outfits :)

The main problem I can think of -
If it turns out that your baby is too big for the smaller clothes you have, you won't be able to exchange them.

It's also important to know if/when you go to resell the clothes, store them for reuse or even give them away to goodwill after your baby grows out of them.
