I think that it was his longing to be loved and the searching for wealth that his longing leads to. He knew his mother cared only for money and believed that if he gave her money, she would be satisfied and then would perhaps love him, but even when he gave her a great sum of money, she didn't become happy and loving, but only more ferocious in seeking more money.

When he hears the house speak, I believe he is really seeing his mother and her driving need for wealth. He wants to quiet that voice by giving his mother money, but the voice only gets louder.

He rocks on the horse ferociously and madly, hoping it will give him enough money to satisfy his mother and get her to stop looking for more money and love him. But the truth is that no amount of money will ever be enough. Perhaps he realizes this as he rocks that final time. At any rate, he is driven mad by his desire to get the money for his mother. His desire has become not so different from his mother's unending desire.

Indeed she mentions that gambling runs in their family. Perhaps it is greed and an unquenchable thirst for wealth that runs in their family, and perhaps it is that greed that kills him.
