The Ford Focus. I own a 2006 Chevrolet cobalt and its pretty stripped down for the amount paid. The ford focus is a few thousand cheaper and has better options in the base model than the cobalt LT has.

Many here will say you should be looking at vehicles you can't afford, or Japanese vehicles for handling. I always say, buy what you like, but most of all buy what you can afford.

You didn't say why you wanted either of these vehicles or what the car would be used for. But you can research both cars at www.edmunds.com. Look for the comsumer reviews on the cars, and go from there.

I own a 2003 Saturn Vue 4 cyl, 5-spd, which has nearly the identical drive train as the Cobalt, so I'm partial to saying buy it.

However, my tastes aren't yours. So test drive both after you do your research, and buy what you like. Be sure to look into insurance costs and expected maintenance costs as well as depreciation.

Edmunds offers a True Cost toOwn section that can give you an idea of how much you'll be out of pocket for each vehicle over the next 5 or 6 years.

Hope this info helps.

Reliability and handling?

You should be looking at a Honda Civic Si, a Mazda3 or a Scion tC.

The Ford and the Chevy will not be able to match the reliability of any of those cars, period. Any of those cars will have better resale value when it comes time to sell/trade it in and any of those cars has equal, if not much better handling than the Cobalt or Focus.

If you care about reliability you don't want a Cobalt OR a Focus. If you care about what your car will be worth in 4 years you don't want either of those cars.

Check Consumer Reports, then go test drive at least 2 of those 3 cars I mentioned and see if you still want a Cobalt or Focus after that.

"That's how Ford and Chevy is, they are relaxed and they lack quality. Toyota and Honda are both very strict and their workers never get a second off which translated to outstanding quality." No, that's just how Americans build their cars, and since Toyotas and Hondas are now also built in America for the USDM market, this is no doubt the reason why Toyota has been getting so many recalls in America recently. Definitely go for the Focus. German engineered a well-balanced all-rounder.

A cobalt is better than the extremely aging American Focus. The cobalt uses less 1980's automotive technology than the focus. but until the US gets the European Focus the Cobalt will always be the better choice as far as it's handling and how fun it is to drive.

What is wrong with "David M" ? I would report him for abuse...what do luxury cars have to do with your question? I would stick with the cobalt. They are affordable, and the aftermarket accessories are endless! You can have a nice car and make it look good for the money!

Stick with the ford, you'll have fewer problems. GM is plagued with issues and their customer service does not care about us....
I have horror stories but not enough room to write.
