I'm a student who will be studying in Melbourne come February.Since i come from a tropical country and this is my first time abroad, what are the essential clothing items i need there? Please help.Thanks a bunch.

It takes an ex-international student in Melbourne to answer this.
I also come from a tropical country and used to help the orientation for international student to come to study in Australia.
This is the fact about Melbourne's weather: It changes all the time. You might have heard of the saying "4 seasons in one day"... well it is almost true. Some people don't like it. However this also means that Melbourne rarely have more than 2 or 3 consecutive days of really hot weather. Last month, there was a day of 42C, but followed with a much pleasant cooler weather the day after. At the moment, I am enjoying a warm 20-somethingC night. I am attaching an information for International students from one of the university in Melbourne. It was designed with the most up-to-date information from the international students' experience.
You will also learn how to wear your clothes in 'layers'. This means that you will wear several clothes at one time. This method is more preferable rather than wearing 1 heavy and bulky jacket, since with the change of weather, you can wear or take off the layers as per your liking.
This is what you need to do in regards to clothing:
1. When you arrive in Melbourne in February, most likely the weather is still quite warm, but it may be still cool compared with where you come from. Therefore prepare a sweater or jacket in your hand luggage, since you may need it on the plane as well.
2. You may bring some warm clothing with you from your home country, but not too much. Most likely those clothes will not be warm enough to be worn in Melbourne winters anyway. You will still need to buy some winter clothes in Melbourne. These will includes some thermal undergarments such as spencer (you'll now it when you arrive here), scarf, beanie and gloves.
3. Do not bring too many jeans pants. They are trendy and students' favorite, but it is not a good insulated clothes and heavy when wet. I'm saying this b'cos rain in Melbourne usually accompanied by strong wind, so your pants very likely will be wet. Nowadays, polar fleece material are the best choice in Melbourne. It is lightweight and warm.
The following points does not have anything to do with weather, but you might want to bring it with you as part of your study:
4. Very comfortable walking shoes. You will walk alot in Melbourne, not to mention in campus as well.
5. Formal/business suit. Depending on your course, you might be required to make a business presentation, so have to dress-up accordingly. I am of course assuming that you are a uni student. If not... ignore this point.
6. Do not bring too much food with you. You may want to bring some for your first nite (since you are not sure where to go for shopping or take-aways). Melbourne has the best reputation as the city with the best food, therefore most likely you can find your favorite food in Melbourne.

G'day, Unfortunately you did not mention where you come from. Please do not take notice of what the non-Aussie-Melbournians commenting about what the weather suppose to be in Melbourne. It is summer at the moment, but as Melbourne usually does, we can have 4 seasons in one day. We had a day where it was 42C last month, and during Christmas day, it was only 16C, with hail and snow in the ski fields. Go figure! If you are coming from northern hemisphere, where it is snowing now, do not worry at all. No matter how cold the weather gonna be in Melbourne, there's nothing to worry about... you'll be fine. If you are coming from from the warm-weathered countries (eg. Indonesia, Mexico, India etc), it is best that you pack a couple of sweaters with you, just in case the weather change. What Melbournians usually do is to 'Layered' the clothing, so you may have 4 layers to defend yourself against colder weather, and taking the layers off once you feel warmer. Melbourne is not always warm! If you're from the tropics you may find your first winter a bit of a shock. In winter (Jun-Aug) the temperature mostly stays between 5 and 15 degrees Celcius. You'll be arriving in mid summer so you have plenty of time to prepare, although be warned that Melbourne can throw in the occasional winter day at any time of year (Christmas Day we had snow on nearby mountains). If you have warm clothes and/or a coat, and boots or enclosed footwear, bring them, but otherwise don't worry as you can buy whatever you need here (if you're on a student budget try op shops). If you're new to those temperatures then ask the locals how they dress to keep warm and maybe even take one shopping with you.
Summer can be hot (many days over 30 degrees, although it often cools to 15 overnight) so also be prepared for that.

At summer most of the days are hot, but the weather in Melbourne a bit crazy, and it could be really cold even in the summer. The nights could be cold too.

hi its sounds like youll be staying in Melbourne for some time....feb is normally hot, mar and apr are generally warm but you may need a cardy in the evenings...then it gets really cold after that...keep in mind melbourne has a reputation of having 4 seasons in a day....and i can tell you that can be very true at times....so in saying that i would recommend you come prepared....but keep in mind the shopping here is fantastic so if you fall short of anything you can always buy something new.....

It can be really warm in the summer, and extremely cold in the winter. It is the part of australia furthest from the equator, so it is very unlike a tropical enviroment, the sun BURNS!!! when its out, and its almost never humid. Pack the sunscreen, lots of it. Or just buy it here.
And remember, we dress real well here in melbourne.

melbourne often experiences 4 seasons in one day, bring jeans definetly...cardigan, floppy cumfy jumper, t shirts/singlets (cause when its hot it is REAL hot) shorts,maybe skirt....depends what ya planning to do really.....just pack to cover all seasons & have a wonderful time!
Check the weather be4 you come , do a google search on the age, then the weeks weather report is there!!

it's hot skinny clothes but lots of sunscreen
