Mortar men were soldiers, much like any other soldiers. They were what is called artillery divisions that launced small missles from weapons called mortars. The mortars are slightly bigger than a hand gun and launch an explosive shell that is about five to ten inches in diameter.

just plain infantry. in every company there where several mortars just like there where Mg's and panzerfaust and panzerschrek.
