If you do an online search, you will find many companies that sell sheet music also sell self teaching books. It's not as effective, but it does work if you are dedicated. I taught myself a lot about the violin, but classical violin is a tougher choice, so there really is only so far you can go without taking lessons. When I come home from work tonight I will see if I can find the company I used to order stuff from, and come back here to post it.

Ok, found the link to Mel Bay company. It was also suggested that a local music store is a good idea, and it is, I just tend to get lazy about going and prefer to shop online, lol!

If you tried teaching yourself last time and didn't feel like you were making any progress, I would highly recommend getting some lessons. If you are still not convinced to take lessons, there are plenty step by step books in the library/book store and a few decent videos on the internet. However, don't learn solely by learning individual songs by tabs, you'll never get a full understanding of the instrument and won't understand guitar anymore then some party trick. Learn the basics such as the notes on the frets and the major, minor, 7, power and full barre chords.

I strongly suggest getting a beginner's book that will teach you basic music theory.......and also, try to get a book that includes a DVD. If you are brand new to the guitar, you can easily develop bad habits when learning because you can't actually SEE how something should be done. A DVD will be a huge help with this.....it will actually show you how to do things correctly. Combined with the book, you can learn to play on your own.
Just remember to be patient....learning guitar ican be a long process, and takes a lot of practice and patience

Go to a music store near you and look for a beginner's guitar book. I learned to play the piano from a book like this. Private lessons are always best for a fast learn, but if you're a loner learner or don't have the money, a beginner's book will definitely help you. The other great thing for learning: Practice, practice, practice!!

If you have ever learned to read music to play a different instrument, you'd find it easy to pick up the guitar. But have no fear if this is not the case. Look online to find guitar tablature for your favorite songs (acoustic ones would be easier to learn at first), and invest in a book of guitar chords. Guitar chord books and tablature use a diagram that represents the guitar's strings and frets to show you where to put your fingers. This way it's easy to learn to play guitar. I bet you'll pick it up really fast. You don't ever need to learn to read music, although it would be good for you to learn how to read rhythms represented by the different types of notes in sheet music and tablature (to know how long to hold a note, or which rhythm to play a series of notes). You could probably learn that online too.

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMSiL It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

This is a good website to learn for beginners.

I learned using tablature. This is very basic but shows you exactly where to place your fingers and what fret and all. You can start with a simple song that you like. It's cool.

Live lessons are the best. I found a guy who charges 20/lesson for 1/2 hour a week. I did this after learning the basics on my own.

Good luck.

It's very simple. Just acquire a guitar chords guide and a song book that contains songs with guitar chords. With determination, you will surely learn it.
