earl is correct , the germans were running out of munitions. hitler sent some of his most faithful men out of his so called hidden bunker and his military out to a large hidden munitions bunker consisting of miles of tunnels! these men traveled there under the most dangerous situations for berlin was already under attack by long range russian guns!! some of these men were even transported there by civilian nazi sympathizers who flew right over the tops of the buildings staying low to avoid anti aircraft gunnery!! problem is , when they got to the munitions bunker, it was completely empty. there was nothing left! munitions factories already sought out and blasted they knew they were at the end! they did try to launch a last ditch effort to save berlin with what they had left but they were quashed by the russians! they all pretty much returned to the hidden bunker under the chancel hall after that and began planning either escape or suicide! only about four men and of course his mistress staid behind in the bunker , the rest attempted to wear civilian clothing and actually deserted him! hitler commmitted suicide with his mistress after marrying her and ordered their bodies be burned by gasoline in the garden behind the chancel hall! and yu know the rest of the story !!

The Germans did use minefields locally to slow russian units. However, minefields are only a delaying tactic. They cannot stop an attack by themselves without the help of a layered defense and support from combined arms elements.

Think of them as speedbumps which allow the defender time to respond to an attack.
