Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a masoleum for his wife Mumtaz who died giving birth to their 13th or so child. He spent 20 years builing the place and was eventually overthrown by one of his sons.

Maybe he chose that location because he could have a clear view of the Taj from his palace down river, a place now called Agra Fort .

Others say he was going to build an equally impressive Taj Mahal for himself across the river and name it the Black Taj but he died and was not able to finish that project. That theory is disputed.
