I use a family doctor. It's easier.

When we (my infant and I) got thrush, it was one visit to treat us both.

When my son had strep and so did my husband, we made an appointment for my son and she treated my hubby too, without charging us 2 office visits!

I've got allergy meds when I took my son to be vaxed--again--just charged one office visit (not saying all docs will do this) But if you and hubby and baby are sick, at least it is one trip to one docs office instead of 2 trips to two places.

And it is easy to ask questions about baby if you have an appointment and vice versa.

Just my opinion.

But more importantly--the doctor him/herself

Is he/she a good doc? Do you click? Is he friendly? Good with babies? Have kids of her own? Have a lot of pediatric cases in the family practice?

I'm comfortable with my doc for many reasons, she is highly trained, very cautious with meds (doesn't over prescribe them), supports natural childbirth and breastfeeding (did both with all 4 of her kids), great with kids, explains things and asks if I have questions, ect

We chose a pediatrician. We felt that it would be better to have our children seen by a doctor whose main practice was taking care of kids. Pediatricians are usually also better at dealing with kids too when they have crying episodes in the office. They are so used to it and they understand that kids go through stages with doctors as they grow up. If you are really uncertain try talking to a few doctors in each field. Most doctros will sit down with you and answer any questions you may have about their practice. Mainly... chose a doctor you feel you can rely on to give your child the care it needs.

Good luck! Remember if you decide that the doctor you chose doesn't suit your preferences you can always change.

Being a Mother of 3 grown children, i can understand your confusion, if your insurance company allows it i would suggest a pediatrician, because they specialize in just children and their developement, im not saying a family Dr is not a good idea, but yes they are trained, but not to the extent that a pediatrician is. And they can help not only your child but also yourself in your childs best well being. And if you are not satisfied you always have the option of seeing your family Dr. Good Luck, and just remember babies are a wonderful miracle, please try and be patient, because babies are hard work, but the end result is the greatest feeling a woman can ever experience.

We chose a family practice doctor.

Have you had a chance to meet some different caregivers and ask them questions? Schedule an interview with them and ask some questions so you can figure out if the doc's philosophies match yours and if you "click" with him/her.

We chose a FP because his philosophies matched ours and we felt very comfortable with him. He is concerned about the WHOLE family when we see him and not just the child. It's worked very well for us.

If you trust your family doctor go with them, they know all your medical history. I used Pediatricians, but the one my kids go to now was my doc when I was growing up. I don't think it really matters. As long as you are happy with the doctor you will get the results you want.

I would go Family Practice because then the family has 1 doctor instead of going to one doctor for baby and then another one because you get something that needs treatment.

Go with the Pediatrician, being that they work with babies everyday, they are up on the latest, not that family Dr's are not good, they are highly trained also, but for peace of mind, I would take the pediatrician, and they can offer the most advice.
Congratulations

My family doctor did all my prenatal care, delivered my kids, and still takes care of us. I decided to use a family doctor because I felt like he really got a chance to know me and my kids. A lot depends on the physician. My doc is really friendly, makes me feel comfortable, and has kids of his own. I trust him.

I got a pediatrician. They specialize in babies and children, so I just feel a lot more comfortable. I have four kids, ranging in age from 25 to 4 yrs., and they all had a pediatrician, but I guess it all depends on the doctor, and how confident you are in them.

It's really up to you.

Personally, my husband and I decided to go with our family doctor, and we've been very happy with the decision. Our doctor knows us all very well, and it's comforting knowing that. Plus, it saves us from having to go to two separate places.
