Psychics and Mystics
Doris Stokes

Doris Stokes, born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, lived across the road from Margaret Thatcher. Doris was an only child, whose first encounter of the psychic world was on an evening when a blaze started out at a friend’s house in the next street.

Her parents’ ran around the corner praying that dear Tom was not involved in the fire. Doris was told to stop where she was, but the curious girl slipped her coat over her nightie and ran after them.

Crowds had gathered around the scene of the fire, when Doris noticed a stretcher being carried out of the house. On the stretcher was the burned body of Tom. She stared, horrified, yet fascinated as to her amazement she saw Tom walking beside his body looking perfectly healthy. There were no signs of him ever being in a fire.

When Doris’s father saw her he clipped her ear and sent her home. She was sobbing with fright, and described to her father what she had witnessed. He patted his daughters head gently, realising his Doris was going to be different from other girls.

There was never enough money in the household, however, she was part of a good family and had a happy childhood until her father died and her world fell apart. They had been very close and over the years he had taught her so much. Before he died he told her, ‘All you have to do is put out your hand and I’ll be there to take hold.’

At the age of twenty when war broke out Doris joined the WRAF. One evening, with a group of friends they went to what the girls called ‘a spook show’ at the local Spiritual church. That night the medium told her that, ‘one day you’ll be doing this.’

On one occasion her father appeared in a vision at a critical time in her life; which is described in her autobiography, Voice in My Ear.

Doris never trained as a medium, but soon became known in the Spiritual church circuit passing on messages from the clear voices in her head.

People were amazed at her down-to-earth attitude to the spirit world. Her belief in life after death was felt strongly by her audience. Describing herself like a telephone exchange puting spirits in touch with their loved ones.

Doris has always maintained that there is no need to fear death
