If the coughing is only every once in awhile and not too often, then it's probably not a major cause for concern. Usually, coughing is just a sign of a minor throat irritation, a piece of food that was swallowed too quickly, or just a common cold. If you're really concerned, major pet stores like PetCo sell an item called "Ferret Lax." This, or any laxatone will coat your fuzzy's throat and help the stuck object down.......and probably out as well.

If the coughing becomes worse, or increases in frequency, then it may be an early warning sign of cardiomyopathy-an enlarged heart. In this case, you would need to get your ferret to a vet quickly.

I hope I've been helpful, and that your ferret's coughing is nothing serious. Good luck to you and your fuzzy!!

You might want to have your ferret checked for intestinal worms. When my husband and I got a new puppy she had a cough, when I took her to the vet they said that it was a side effect from a parasite that she picked up at the APL. They gave me some meds for her and within days she passed the worms and stopped coughing. Just a thought.
