Ive never been to the beaches in Roma, but you should try to go to Capri Island, just South of Roma near Napoli. It is about 2 to 3 hours driving distance from Roma to Napoli and if by Train, then it is less than a couple of hours. Go by Boat from Napoli or Pozzuoli and you get to swim off from the boat because Capri hardly has a beach! it looks more like giant rock from the water and where people live on. It is breathtakingly beautiful. The water is deep aquamarine, you will see other people swimming around thier boats also. This is the kind of trip you can't pass on, also if you can try to stop over to Amalfi Coast. It is kinda touristy and I would say fairly safe. Amalfi is famous for thier Lemoncello. Once you are there you will see many of those be sold everywhere. Try to book your trips through a Tour.
I can't wait to go back this summer! Have fun!

I need to add, it may still be cold around March. so I'm not so sure about swimming during that time. When I came to Naples Italy early June this past year it was still cold until mid June, then it started to get warm. But who knows, it might be warm when you are there in March.
