No, his name is Bill Cosby, not Crosby. That's Bing Crosby who was in all the "Road to" movies with Bob Hope, They called it the Cosby Show because everyone had heard of Bill Cosby, but no one had ever heard of Cliff Huxtable. Money talks and we all know what walks. The name recognition made people watch the show in the first place.

I believe they were cashing in on Bill Cosby's name as a comedian and actor. No one would recognize the Huckstable name, but Cosby's name carried his reputation, and people would be more likely to tune in.
