It's hard to answer this question without involving religion. Answer take your pick. Buddhists say that when you die you will be reincarnated. To excape the cycle of reincarnation you must free yourself from all earthly desires and then you will reach Nirvana which is nothingness.
Hindus believe something very similar, except you must free yourself from karma. The western mind thinks the idea of reincarnation is a cool concept. To the Hindu and Buddhist mind, reincarnation is a curse. At any rate the cycle of reincarnation for the Hindu ends when he is reincarnated as a male and as a Brahman and he frees himself of karma. Once this is accomplished he will join the Brahma.
Islam is a bit sketchy, this is not my expertiese, and considering current events, I'm not going to get into it.
Secular Humanism, Satanism, Neo-Paganism, and Athiesm have similar beleifs about what happens at death. Pretty much, you just die and rejoin the cycle of life, pushing up those daisies.
Shinto and a number of Animistic or true Pagan religions believe that you will become a spirit that has influence over the living.
Accoriding to Zoroastrianism when die all the good things that you've done and all the bad things that you've done will be placed on a scale. If the good that you've done outweighs the bad then you will go to heaven. If the bad that you've done outweighs the bad then it's hell for you buddy.
Now there comes Christianity, which is completly exclusive and offeres no second chances after death. According to Christianity; when you die you will be judged by Jesus. If you have put your full faith in Jesus then your spirit will enter heaven. if you do not put your faith in Jesus as the Savior of the world then your spirit will be sent to hell where there is eternal torment. What I find interesting is that Christians also believe that after the end of the world has come, those who have put their faith in Jesus will be given new bodies to inhabit a new heaven and a new earth.

In my learnings, I have come to the conclusion that we are all on a multiple task/multiple life learning curve.
Our task(s) are to overcome our vices and move towards righteousness. While at the same time, willingly coming to God, Jehovah, Allah, The One Power, Love...
I personally believe that it doesn't matter what we call him, He knows if we are talking to him, just the same as satan, devil, chaos, hate... knows if we are speaking to him.
As I have come to understand it, we all have a time of purging that we must endure after death, thus learning what the effects of what our actions were. (both bad and good)
The traditional thought of this is Purgatory (endless suffering), but I have come to think that we spend the time there, of our own choosing, and can leave when we have learned our lessons.
I.E. The alcoholic overcoming the deep desire of drunkeness.
Each life brings us closer to overcoming our individual vices, and moving closer to God.

many people who have had near death experiences claim seeing a bright white light and people whom they love that have gone before them...my explanation is that we are sent back to relive our lives till we get it right...but before we are sent out into the world again we meet up with the ones we've loved and respected in our past life (they give us support and love)...the white light signifies rebirth...figuratively and realisticly...when we are born into the world literally we are greeted by the light of our new world. heaven is what each of us strive for, and ultimately where we aspire to...and until we learn from our past lives and the choices we've made then we are continually sent back...to get it right. just a thought.

I think once you die you will come back as a different person with a different lifestyle and your soul will go to Heaven or Hell.

there's no afterlife. we just die. our neurons in our brains will not be functioning. it's like an eternal sleep without the dreams. that's the reality and a lot of people can't handle that reality. the end.

A big yellow screen appears in front of your eyes, and the words, YOU HAVE BEEN TRICKED, appears in heavy black type against the yellow background.
Then four more words appear, THERE IS NO GOD.
And then the screen disappears.
For ever.
