In a Roleplay game if a player gets sick and stays in contact with everyone but can not play for a month or?

two. What is the proper ettiquette of the other players and characters. Does a sick and incapicatied human mean the same for the character then? How is this appraoched?

just have the character go off on a side-quest of no consequence and when he gets better, have the character return

It seems the most common approach is that the character has been "sleeping" for a while and has just woke up. That's an okay excuse...if you're Rip Wan Winkle. I like the side quest idea that the first person mentioned. That's good.
