Simply by saying that confusion means he doesn't understand what you're saying, what is happening, or why something is happening.

A confused child can understand this definition, and then you can explain what he's confused about to end his confusion.

But if you tell an elderly parent with Alzheimer's, she may likely remain confused because her ability to comprehend has diminished. She may become upset that she can't grasp the meanings of words anymore, and grow even more confused.

E.g : There was some confusion as to whether we had won or lost.
