I recently asked another question about jumping a dead battery, and got a couple different answers on the order that the cables should be attached to the two cars. I looked it up briefly online and found even more variations.

In what order should the jumper cables be attached, and why?
Should the car with the live battery be running, and why?

Best (safest) way to do this:
Connect positive cable(red) to positive post on each battery. making sure to keep black ends from touching anything.
Connect negative cable (black) to good battery negative post and then to a ground on the dead car. It is not recommended to connect to the dead battery negative post to pevent sparks.
You can do this with the engine running since you would be getting voltage anyway with the engine off.
Disconnect in reverse order making sure not to touch red and black together.

It really isn't that big of deal, but the order should be as following: Place the (--) cable on a good grounding place in the dead battery car, then place the (+) cable on the positive post of the dead battery. Then without the car running, place the positive, then negative cable ON the battery, you don't have to put it on the frame. Then start the car, and hold the rpms at about 2000 for ten or 15 seconds. Then have someone crank over the dead car wile the other car is running. Hope this helps!!

PS the reason they say to do this is so idiots dont electrocute themselves by hooking up to the good battery first and then accidentally touching the cables together.

Simple really.
Turn off all accessories in both cars.
Make sure cars are NOT touching
Connect + cable to dead battery
Connect + cable to good battery
Connect - cable to good battery
Connect - cable to ground (frame, exhaust manifold, etc) Do not connect to the battery!!!

This can be done with the starter car running or not. If the dead car won't immediately start let them sit for a few minutes and try again.

junior is correct , another reason the good + goes on last is if that car is running it will start charging , the bad battery will start releasing hydrogen , one spark means boom , so remove good battery + first . good luck , be safe
