Every individual sees (and indeed recalls) events very differently. There seems to be no objective reality that any one person can witness. Why is it that we each have such different perceptions of a single thing, or does reality not exist as we think?

This is indeed a very interesting question. I remember having a debate with my friends wherein we suggested that "Red" as I see it would not entirely match with how my friend percieved it, in hue, saturation and intensity. But neverthless, "Red" would still be Red for her and me alike. Similarly, though all of us view situations and circumstances differently, depending on various cultural, circumstantial or simply "upbringing" differences, there still are many fields where majority of us have a similar opinion. you perhaps cant call it "objective reality", but there definitely is some objectivitivty and logic in each person's perception and this logic helps make the "subjectivity" more and more objective.. :)

"Why does our consciousness distort reality so much?"

Does it? People distort reality it's called lip service. Do you realize how many people brag about it?

Condsider these realities:
Avoidance of responsibility
Denial
Manipulation/Control
Lying

"Why is it that we each have such different perceptions of a single thing, or does reality not exist as we think?"
Reality/Truth exists as much as perception exists Truth and reality are one in the same ...look it up in the dictionary they are not opposites. Although some, try as they may, believe they can control truth/reality for what ever agenda one may be seeking.

to answer your question lets quote Jalaluddin Rumi, the 13th century Muslim mystic poet:

If you want what visible reality
can give, you're an employee.
If you want the unseen world,
you're not living your truth.

Both wishes are foolish,
but you'll be forgiven for forgetting
that what you really want is
love's confusing joy.

Ali ibn Abi Talib says "Submission to Allah's Will is the best companion; wisdom is the noblest heritage; theoretical and practical knowledge are the best signs of distinction; deep thinking will present the clearest picture of every problem."

Peace be to you.

human beings have faith despite they suspect because of the fact they have not got any stable beginning place to base their lives upon, till one is a Christian. This "at the instant actuality" that maximum of human beings have been deceived into believing isn't 'actual'. i pass by what the Bible tells me. It has in no way been incorrect. 2 Corinthians 4:18 "So we fix our eyes not on what's seen, yet on what's unseen. For what's seen is short-term, yet what's unseen is eternal."

You only believe what you want to believe. If the truth hurts, you tend to try to deny it.
