The sad, sad state our society is in is to blame on rap music? Think about it...
(Speaking to the sorry generation) Before rap busted into the mainstream thanks to Eminem, how many of YOUR parents thought it was cool to drive around in 78 Monte Carlos with gold rims dealing drugs and whoring women? Probably not too many, and they probably still don't.
And now, when Eminem busted rap into the mainstream, more and more over the years have come onto it following him, and now it's polluting the radios. The stations KIDS listen to. So now they think it's cool to live this lifestyle, get baked before school, whatever they do to be cool. I don't know how it is where you live, but here in MO it's gotten so bad kids in 4th and 5th grades are starting to be like this. F*ck rap.

kjs63: yeah, that's what our parents' parents said about rock music, but it was like this... you can't even compare them. Rock music, woodstock, all that, was about the so-called "peace revolution," smoke some weed, listen to some music, etc. Sure, there were probably a few people that messed it up for everyone, but how are you comparing that to a genre of music that teaches kids they need guns to safely walk down the street, to deal drugs, to be a "pimp" and sleep with as many women as you can, getting drunk every weekend is awesome, etc? I see your point, but you obviously don't see mine.
And yeah, I know it was in the mainstream long before that, but thanks to Eminem we have 50 Cent, his clique, and everybody who followed him saying "hey, it's okay to do our rap and send it to the radio, look at THIS white boy." Before Eminem, there was not NEARLY as much rap on the "number 1 hit music stations" as there is now.

That's what parents in the 50's said when Rock Music came into the mainstream.
It was BS then. It's BS now. A music genre does not have that kind of influence on society unless YOU give it that much influence!

I wouldn't go as far as blaming all the crap on rap music. I don't listen to rap so much but also don't like the fact of the style of culture that the music does influence. Really the same could go for Rock Music and Beer Party, Emo music and Drugs. The problems we as a nation face is the outside influences are more predominate in our children's lives than the parents are. We as parents need to know what your kids are listening too, monitor who they hang around. Quit turning a cheek and pay some attention to the kids. Ask questions and Respect the kids. You might be surprised what you will find out!

A better way to phrase this would be that rap music exists as a result of the sad state of our society. Understand, I'm a rocker, not a rapper. I think 99.9 % of all rap is trash. However, it is more likely that the sad state of our society has more to do with the church, and the way children are supposed to be brainwashed early, yet they see the adults in their lives and others in their society not doing as they have been taught. Get rid of the church and you get rid of the wars. Let people think on their own. Amazingly enough, most know right from wrong, good from bad, light from dark. Rap may or may not stop then, but we may come up with a better, more logical and rational idea on how to deal with those who do choose to embrace the dark side. Think about it...

dude ur out of ur mind, there were gangs and mobs way before eminem.... and even if you are going to blame it on rap.. do'nt blame it on eminem... he's not even CLOSE to the worst offender.. at least most of the stuff he talks about mean something or tell a story or something.... a lot of these other guys all they talk about is screwing and smoking..... so why do'nt u do some closer research before you start accusing people of rap being the reason our society is in a sad state. cuz it's not true. Even without rap eventually this stuff would come anyway

I think you need to pull your head out of you *** and you'll start hearing some good music. I'm not saying Eminem is at all my favorite but if you look past most hip hop lyrics it's more about the flow and how it lays with the beat. Not everyone can be as big of an N*Sync fan as you buddy. And if kids are so easily influenced by the music they hear then maybe the parents are to blame for not teaching their kids morals.

Get baked? Our kids in MO do that? What is it...maybe I haven't listened to enough rap to know. I have a daughter and she doesn't seem very baked to me. Anyway, yes, our generation thinks rap is bad, but my mother swore that Elvis and the Beatles were trash, so whose to say that it didn't start long before Eminem came along? Where did the original moral decay of our society begin? Hmm...I think I feel a question coming on!

I'm not a fan of rap but believe the issue is more complicated than moral degeneration of listening to rap music. When government becomes so intrusive as to legislate how parents discipline, what can be lawfully taught in schools, discourages personal responsibility by labeling misbehavior as a disorder, what are our children to think when there are no concrete rules. If it were only as simple as banning rap I'd be on the first band wagon.

If parents were being parents there wouldn't be these issues.
I have 3 young daughters myself, 2 are elementary school age, and have listened to EVERYTHING people have mentioned on here, and yet, NEITHER are little drug lords in training, nor do they cuss, swear or walk around with their pants to their ankles waving around a piece. They are appreciative of the arts, and we have conversations about them....they are not left to their own devices to "figure" the world out on their own, like MOST children I see these days.
It really is all in how parents relate to their children. My children are involved in community, church, sports, Girl Scouts, etc., and EVERY SINGLE TIME we are at one of these events there are SEVERAL parents who just swing the car by the front door, drop their kids off and speed off for some free r&r....this includes Sunday School. Why bring your kids to Sunday School if you are not going to go to church with them to teach them what you want them to learn? Why have them involved in hockey if you aren't going to go to the games and cheer them on? Why have them in Girl Scouts if you don't want to attend with your daughter at least a couple of the campouts each year?
Music didn't do this, the media didn't do this, and neither did gays or lesbians. Parents do not take their responsibilities very seriously and THAT is what the breakdown is in society. There is no more teaching of manners, empathy or self-accountability anymore. It's all "blame everyone else and then you're fine". What has rap music got to do with it?

I don't like rap, but I think it's more the image being portrayed than it is the music. It's all about being rich and buying the most expensive stuff to be cool and if anyone disagrees with you - Blast a cap in their a**. Most people cannot afford to live the lifestyle they are shown, but they try. How many rock songs are about killing cops or beating up people?

Sorry. Start with the Republicans, hipicrit religous freaks and racist fools. People were getting baked way before rap music. The world was screwed up WAY before rap. Rap is a outlet to release some of the frustrations, rage and disgust with the world today.

I've seen a lot of questions lately bashing rap. While I'm not a huge fan, I think it's getting a bad rap (absolutely no pun intended). People have said this about music since music began. Remember the brouhaha about Elvis, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles? They also were singlehandedly bringing down society...
