A damned fine question. And it all involves money.

The state and federal governments won't touch the tobacco industry because of all the taxes they collect. The Tobacco industry is huge, and pays tons of taxes. The government at nearly every level also levies "sin taxes" on tobacco, garnering even more money. Then the states can sue the tobacco industry to get even *more* money, which they then use to build new football stadiums.

And the federal government sends money to the tobacco growing states to help them support the product, while at the same time spending billions to put out anti-smoking campaigns.

Meanwhile, the government decides to ban trans fats (which are far less of a health hazard than tobacco) because they are a health hazard. The ban on trans fats is supposed to help save 500,000 people from heart disease. but if only 1% of the smokers in the U.S. caught cancer, that would still be more than one million cases of cancer every year.

Trans fats were selected for banning because they are an easy target.

If you want logic, the Government is the wrong place to look for it.

I think your question could be better put. I think you are asking that why is marijuana illegal, and cigars are not, if they are both smoked substances and bad for your health?

If that is what you are asking, then my answer would be that probably because one is drug. And today, it is not only marijuana that is in that thing that is being smoked... it is laced with other much more harmful drugs.

But the main thing, is that it is mind altering and can affect your mind permanently, even after you have stopped smoking it. I have two sibblings that smoke marijuana a lot and even though they stopped years ago, you can tell they had been pot heads. Their minds just do not work the same and bright as they once were.

And another reason would be that you can smoke a cigar and not be affected by it when driving or working your job, but not the same can be said for smoking marijuana. It could be very dangerous.

Having said that, there are many double standards in this country... and others. Drinking alcohol is legal... and dangerous. Not only to our own health and well-being but to the safety and well-being of those around us. It affects the mind as well as the body. I would think that it would be more on par with marijuana than cigars.

It would seem, that we as supposedly intelligent human beings, do very stupid things to our bodies. We know that they are harmful... smoking, drinking, doing drugs, yet so many of us do them. And who is really getting the benefit from our addictions? Not those who do them, but those who sell them.

So here we sit, drinking, smoking up, doing drugs.... and for what? We just ruin our health and relationships, and put other people at risk of injury and death, and all the while we are helping others get rich, while we get poorer.

Stupid, eh?

Marijuana has nothing to do with the cigar industry. Cigars are not made with Marijuana.

Also, the cigar industry has not gotten larger than it was at the end of the 1990's; I believe it has shrunk a lot in the past 5 or 6 years.

Marijuana was outlawed for two major reasons. The first was because "All Mexicans are crazy and marijuana is what makes them crazy". The second was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern gateway myth.

The marijuana laws were the product of lunacy so silly that people just laugh when they read the story today. For example, the US Official Expert on marijuana testified in court, under oath, that marijuana had turned him into a bat.

You can find a short summary of why it was outlawed, along with links to original source documents at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm

Alcohol is legal because we tried making it illegal and found that it only caused more problems than it solved. You can find some info on that at http://druglibrary.org/prohibitionresults.htm

Tobacco is legal because it has always been big business and because for years they claimed that smoking tobacco was actually healthy. They used to feature doctors and nurses in tobacco ads.

Every major study of the marijuana laws in history has concluded that the marijuana laws were based on racism, ignorance, and nonsense. They all said there was no justification for marijuana being illegal. You can read the full text of those reports at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/studies.htm

I assuming you're refering to the many flavored cigars out there that are obviously only used for rolling "blunts". It's the same way they can sell glass bongs, pipes, rolling papers, and other things that will get you in trouble if law enforcement catches you with them. Tobacco is legal, and all those things can be used for tobacco useage. If you get caugth with rolling papers and no tobacco, then that's considered paraphernalia. Pretty crazy, I know. So it's not illegal to sell flavored cigars even if they are only use as "blunts" and no one smokes the tobacco, as long as it is tobacco in them it's okay.
