It's normal to have a lot of discharge in late pregnancy.

You might try drinking a big glass of water and then laying down on your left side for at least 30 minutes. See if the contractions stay the same, go away or increase. If they go away, you might have just been dehydrated. If the continue or increase in frequency, you may be in labor.

A general rule on this is, if you can walk or change positions, and the cramp goes away, or loses intensity than it isn't labor. Stand up, walk across the room once or twice, if it still hurts, than it could very possibly be labor. Most Drs. though do not want to hear from you until you've felt these pains for at least an hour, and they are regular (between 5 and 7 minutes apart). In some women at this stage (38 weeks) they'll have these pains and after a half of an hour it all goes away, so I'd wait until it has been an hour and maybe a little longer to make sure it doesn't go away.

Contractions basically feel like your whole stomach tightening up really hard.

Are these cramps regular? How many weeks are you? It could be labor, but it's hard to tell without more info.

Edit after add'l details: The this may be it. Don't worry about the discharge, as long as it's not bloody you're fine. Grab a watch that times seconds, sit down, put your feet up and get comfortable. For the next 15-20 min or so, time your contractions. See how long they last, and how far apart they are, starting from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next. If they are pretty regular, you're in labor. If they are 5 minutes apart or less, it's time to head to the hospital. Congrats!

Sound sliek your mucus plug has come out. They could be Braxton Hicks contractions as well. Time them to see how far apart they are. Walk a bit...it helps relieve the pain. A contraction feels like your whole abdomen area is cramping up...usually lasts a couple of minutes then stops. Alternate walking and ditting for a bit to see if you can relax. Call the Dr if they are getting a regular pattern to them.

I had period like cramps during early labor but yours can be braxton hicks as well. You will know when you are in hard labor. The pains will come and go very few minutes and are unbearable. Hard labor is a twisting feeling..almost like severe gas pains.

It feels like someone is ramming a dagger in your cervix.

The cramps could be braxton-hicks or false labor. But 38 weeks along...I'd call the doctor and the daddy and head to the hospital anyway.

false labour...
contractions occur at irregular intervals,
intervals between contractions remain long,
intensity of contractions remains the same,
contractions are located chiefly in the abdomen,
you may find that contractions are most uncomfortable when you are moving about, there is no "show"(blood tinged mucus).

true labour....
contractions occur at a more regular interval.(ex. 15 to 20 minutes apart, lasting 1/2 minute)
intervals between contractions gradually shorten,
intensity of contractions gradually increase,
contractions can be felt in the abdomen, back, and sometimes in the thighs,
contractions do not decrease when you are resting, but are consistent regardless of what you are doing, "show" is usually present.
you are 38 weeks along so this could be it.....good luck....

Contractions start off feeling like period cramps. You may want to call in to your doctor's office and see what they feel you should do.
