I spent the past year in Japan on a work assignment. I went over thinking everything would be expensive because that is always what I heard. It's really no true. Tokyo can be a bit much but all other cities are similar to what I experience in the US. Somethings are better, somethings are worse. Check a site like frommers.com, they may have some good info on hotel rooms which will be your major expense. Also, if you are taking the shinkansen(high speed trains), it is best to buy tickets outside the country, they offer deals for tourists.

Not including spending money for souvenirs, just for transportation and room and board, anywhere from 200,000yen to 300,000 yen, depending on how lavishly you want to go. If you stay at youth hostels and capsule hotels, you could do a week in about 150,000 yen. If you are going to do a cross-country trek, you will need about 200,000 if you get that special youth rail pass, because traveling by train is the most convenient mode of transportation.

Yeah sure... a week in Japan? you should at least stay in Tokyo for a week dude .I'm going there next week 4th time just for two weeks and if you do know cheap places to eat, cheap hostels - like "olimpic hotel" take with you about 150.000 Y and you will manage to get a loads of crazy stuff and have fun.

excluding your airfare, it really depends on what you want to do and where you want to travel. for cheap travelling, staying in a hostel or a budget ryokan (japanese style inn) is reccomended, they cost about AUS10-15 per night. meals cost about AUS5-6, and one train stop to the other is Y160 in tokyo.

if you plan to travel from tokyo to kyoto, the highway bus is cheapest at Y5,000 for a one-way trip. but if you're feeling adventurous, you can get a JR Rail pass, unlimited rides on all JR lines in japan.

For one week, I suggest that you bring Y80,000-Y100,000. this will enable you to splurge once in a while.

good luck~!
