I have been to 9 European countries and I would highly recommend Slovenia. It is cheaper than most other European countries, and in five days you could take in pretty much all of the sights. I would recommend you spend 2 days in Bohinj and Bled (which are in the Alps and highly romantic), 1+ day in Ljubljana (the capitol city), 1 day along the coast in Piran and Ankaran, and then take a one day trip to Venice, Italy (only a 3-ish hour drive). You get the best of everything: city, culture, nature, coastline, mountains!

for a couple? Venice in Italy, u can spend a great time there, so romantic and beautiful, in general, Italy is a great place, u really feel welcomed, u can visit Florence too, it's not very far from Venice, or may be Siena or Genoa...
i would suggest the spanish "costa del sol" too if u like the beach cities, it's beautiful for swiming ad having nice time there, marbella is the best city there, but expensiv, u can try torremolinos, malaga, or benalmedina, they are all beautiful cities!

I am from the states and live and work in ireland I have had the opportuntity to travel most countries of the EU I recommend you go visit, barcelona and or portugal, if u want lots of night life, if you want romance tour Italy fly into Rome and go from there, lots of methods of cheap transportation like www.ryanair.com very very cheap flights. if u want sheep and rain go to ireland if u want shopping london if u want just a nice trip overall i recommend the barcelona very nice area, great food, ocean at your feet, go to LAS RAMBLAS which is the main street downtown and it loads of fun lots of entertainment. I stayed in the expo hotel nice place and the train metro station is at your door literally. If you go to Italy the food and wine is superb, but the language barrier is there and in barcelona most people speak or understand english
