Wait staff in restaurants get tips because they are paid below minimum wage. WAY below. On average only $2.50 an hour. At Sonic, they don't expect tips to be a part of the carhops salary so they are probably making between $5.75 and $7 an hour. I'm not saying that you shouldn't tip the carhops, because it is a very generous gesture, I just don't think you should stress about it if you don't have change to tip with.

I always wondered about this.. I generally do if it is hot / cold / raining. I guess I will now.
I haven't paid with my debit card in the machine at the board, but I have handed the carhop my debit card...and I can add the tip when I sign the card.

Yeah i'm with the girl that says to keep the change. Unless I sit there and harrass them to bring me ketchup or to refill my drink for me or whatever. Then I might give them an extra dollar or 2.

My sister used to work there, and this is what she said. They usually are tipped, but it's a small amount. I usually tell them to keep the change ($1 or less).

If you stay and eat there, then yes. If you just drive up and get your food, no. I have friends that worked there in high school and, like any other waitress, they work for tips.

I have to agree with you... they don't really 'do' anything except bring your food to your car. However, if it's really hot or cold...I typically give them a couple dollars.
