You probably have a lot of rubbish installed which are all trying to start when you boot up. Try cleaning out all unwanted applications etc.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.
Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.
Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Now lets clean up your registry.
Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...
Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!
Now lets clean up your disk.
Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.
Now lets tweak your connection. There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.
Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php...
You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/
The second one is Cablenut.
Windows XP tested and approved
CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All computers slow down as we use them, but thats an excessive startup time! You need to do regular housekeeping on your pc to keep it running sweet. There are some jobs you do once a week and some once a month.
- First, uninstall any software you no longer need, especially if you have the installation disc.
- Next run Ccleaner. Use the Issues tool and the Cleaner.
Then install Winpatrol and use it to stop all your programs loading on startup. Leave your anti virus, just stop things like your office suite.
- Then boot in safe mode and run an anti virus, an anti spyware and an anti adware.
Then defragment your hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter.
Reboot and see if that helps.
Update and run all your security software and Ccleaner once a week; and have a clear out then defragment once a month.
You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.
You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus
You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.
And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Go to start>run>and type in 'msconfig' press enter. Go to the startup tab and remove all the ticks and restart,this should clear all the programs that are running at start up and bogging your computer down.
Then download Spybot from 'http://www.sbybot.com' as well as the latest updates run it and delete the crap that it finds. See if that works

Try using disk defragment. Go to the start menu on the bottom left of your computer screen. Click on it then click all programs, accessories, system tools, then disk defragment. A window will pop up. Then click on defragment. This will boost your computer speed.

The most likely explanation is spamware/spyware/adware. Go get one of the free spyware scanner/cleaners. These days you need to be running both anti-virus software & spyware blocking software.
Much of the current spam software can't be deleted using tools like MSconfig as it hides itself, or even installs 2nd programs to reinstall itself if you do delete it.
My personal favorite is Spybot Search & Destroy located at....
