the way to win at poker is knowing how to read the other players. knowing when your opponents are bluffing, or knowing when the think they have a good hand is the main key.
here's a little light reading for you to do:
http://www.filmzone.com/articles/poker_player_types.htm
http://www.naws.org.uk/pokerstyles.htm
also you can do some searching for the types of poker players to look for key signs in their actions that will tell you the kind of player they are.
look for keywords:
poker, player, type, style, personality, etc.
my favorite is the twitcher. he shakes, and sweats and never bets big. folds almost every hand. you can almost always get him to fold by betting big because he never bluffs. but watch out when he goes in big, cause you know he has a very good hand to take this risk.
you can also watch the movie Rounders. i watch it every once in a while before a big poker tourney.

That's a question a lot of people would like to know the answer to!
The best thing to do is be totally aware of the rules (they're pretty simple for Holdem) and not take chances, play hands where you start with two great cards and throw away anything that makes you think "If I get lucky this might win"

Find a site where you can learn the basics
Only play really good hands during the first few rounds. When the blinds increase and some of the opposition has been eliminated you can play crappier hands.
Be willing to risk everything on a good hand such as AA, KK, QQ, AKs, KQs, AQs etc..
Try and get a sense of how your opponents play and then play them accordingly.
I recently played like 10 guys in a $10 buy-in game of Texas Hold'em and when it was down to me and 4 other guys left I was short stacked with barely any chips and got dealt a bunch of good hands like AQs all in a row and I just went all-in on all of them and doubled up a bunch of times and knocked out one guy and pretty quickly I was chip leader. Once I was chip leader I knew I couldn't lose I just kept betting tripple the minimum bet and both players folded and I took the big blind each time and eventually eliminated another player. Then I continued this with the last remaining player and he got sick of this and decided to play a hand I think it was J 10 off suit and I ended up taking down the pot with a flush. So I made myself $100.

CHEAT!!!!
Kidding!! While you read this look at number one!
1. Keep a straight face!!!!
2. When you get your 2 cards....with those you want to get 5 of the same suit, or a pair, a 3 of a kind, and so fourth...
3. You can Bet, or check...When you check, that means your not doing anything....it's the next persons turn. If you don't this you hand (2 cards) are good enough when your oppnent(s) bet, you can fold....folding means you just get out of the whole turn without getting money.
I think that should cover it!!

To be honest, if you have to ask this question, you'll probably come home broke (or more broke). If you do decide to gamble the rent, I would strongly urge you to get up from the table if you somehow get ahead in the game. The longer you sit, the more likely it is a better player will get your money.
Once you have a better understanding of the game, you'll understand that playing when broke rarely works out to your benefit.

I woudl seriously not play poker when you're broke. play it when you have extra cash. Take out a second job when you're broke.
Unless this was one big bluff and then you probably will win some money as that's what it's all about!

Keep cool
Try to read your opponents
Really know the winning hands
Try to work out the probability of your oppontents hand
Dont get desperate and go all in with nothing!
Play your hand to its optimum, don't chase others away with your betting, reel them into putting more in the pot

Patience is most definately a virtue, dont drink as this increases your bravery and makes you bet stupid, only bet when you have a good hand, even if you get a rediculously good hand off the flop, start low to lure people in, then raise on the second third bets.
I usually get bored to tears after 4-5 hours especially as we have one friend, who deliberates everything, tosser.
anyway just remain patient, wait for the big hands, dont scare people off and then rinse them. hope this helps

'Reading' other players is a vital skill, but also make sure that your play and tactics do not fall into a predictable pattern. Vary your play throughout the game to keep your opponents off-balance and create a bit of uncertainty in their minds.

Wait for a really good hand and go all in then just bluff bluff bluff. You need the good hand first so people do not think you know how to bluff.
