Let me put it like this. If it wasn't for me earning, we'd have no money coming in at all, due to a deadbeat lazy git of a husband quitting his job and being in no great hurry to find another.

Modern society and many modern women are not structured/conditioned that way any more, not so long ago we were still lucky enough to have two choices work or stay at home, now the choice is rarely there.
For many it was real independence proof that we were just as good in the work force. It has its good points and its bad.
