no. I've hidden a camcorder in the past just to see what they do and it explained why my beer would be missing and why the PlayStation was warm when I came home.

I think that would really have to depend on a lot of factors. The type of animal, the relationship between the animal and the owner, the care the animal recieves while the owner is away and many other factors. I will say that I have a Chines Crested Hairless dog and he and I have a very special bond. If I leave the house if only for an hour, when I come home I am treated to the most spastic reception I have ever seen. He is obviously so happy that he does not know what to do and ends up running in circles, literally bouncing off my legs and jumping from chair to chair. He does not do this with anyone but me even though I do not feed or take care of him, my daughter does.
As far as fish or most reptiles go, I would say they would prob not even know your gone, except a bearded dragon but that's another story.

Definately! I know this from experience and from actually having a good laugh from a friend who told me about how upset his dog got one day when she jumped through the glass to chase down his truck as he was leaving for work. (yes the dog is fine not a scratch on her or I wouldn't have laughed!)
Dogs (and cats) do miss their human companions to the point where they will show it by, a. jumping out a window after them, b. (this happened to me) tearing apart the trash or making some other mess ($1500 worth of tiles, bathroom fixtures and a door!!!!)
Its called separation anxiety, babies go through it as well when their parents try to put them into daycare after being with them everyday for such a long period of time.
There are ways to get around it, they do sell toys and such that will keep them occupied and what I have found works is hiding treats in a spot that you know the dog (or cat) will go to.

My pets miss us if we have to go away my male Siamese cat meets us at the door and wants to be petted and purrs very loudly we think he does this because he misses having us around to play with. We also have two other cats so it's not that he's totally alone either.

Yes they do. Well my dog does and we're in the process of trying to re-house him as we're moving overseas (vets advice). I think I'm finding this harder than he is (Dog, Cav king charlie). He's always happy to see me when he comes back from his weekends at new home. But 2 sayings... "You never choose a pet.. they choose you!!" and "Dogs have masters...Cats have staff", Well to be honest all pets have staff. I mean when times have been hard I've gone without a meal just so my dog can have his meal

One day perhaps not, unless they have serious separation anxiety. Usually in a day they just look forward to your coming back to play, go for a walk etc. but longer than that they do miss you!

Yes...absolutely they do. I own a house full of animals and when I go away we have a "critter sitter" who happens to be my sister. She tells us if she sees any signs of depression or separation anxiety...and they all have shown signs of both in our absence. They sure do appreciate it when we get home!!
