Subnetting is when you take a network and divide it into groups or subnets.

Say you have a network router.
Router IP= 10.0.0.0
Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0

With those settings that allows your network from 10.0.0.0-10.0.0.256 as usable addresses. Or 256 Hosts

By stepping up a notch it allows further addressing as follows
Subnet Mask=255.255.254.0 This would double you to 512 Hosts. So you would have from 10.0.0.0-10.0.2.0

The main reasoning for subnetting is to divide traffic, but it can also be to allow for more clients on one network. In alot of schools they do this due to the number of clients and network based appliances that are attached to the network. Subnetting will allow all the computers in that range to communicate without having to use seperate hardware to divide the networks.

Hope this helps!
