Flagellation can release the guilt from the mind only if the person is willing to believe that the process actually helps thier soul.
I'd imagine that once the pain is gone, you'd start having sinful thoughts again. Prayer is better because its a mental healing. Other than that you just have to have faith that Jesus was already punished for your sins.

Personally I think self-flagellation is a bit sick. The God I was raised to believe in was a benevolant God, I just can't imagine that God wanting his followers to beat themselves bloody for their mistakes. I would think He would want them to learn and grow from them. I was taught forgivness, not punishment.

to believe that god has forgiven you of your sins by his sons life given for your sins should be enough for you .if you hate your self so much as to need to hurt yourself then you have not found the saving grace of our lord jesus christ
