Here are 10 gases that make up clean air: In order of highest to lowest concentration they are Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Carbon dioxide, Neon, Helium, Methane (CH4), Krypton, Hydrogen, and Xenon.
Air is a mixture of 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and approximately 1% other trace gases.
So it seems that we breathe "air", not necessarily just oxygen. Air = a little oxygen with a lot more nitrogen. It's not that we need nitrogen, we just don't need 100% oxygen. It's just a coincidence that we need 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen and the Earth contains 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen.

The atmosphere of earth is comprised mainly of nitrogen with oxygen and carbon dioxide making up the balance. Oxygen only represents about 20% of the gas in the atmosphere we breathe. Fact is, we inhale all of the gases into our lungs but our body only utilizes the oxygen for aerobic respiration purposes. If you were in a chamber that only had carbon dioxide, your lungs would still inhale it and absorb it but you would die because the body can't utilize carbon dioxide for aerobic respiration purposes and the blood cells carrying oxygen to needed organs and tissues would eventually fail to deliver and your body would begin shutting down. Short answer is all is inhaled and absorbed, but the mix of oxygen has to be high enough to support the respiration process.

We don't. We inhale everything but our bodies only absorb the oxygen and we exhale everything else.
