Just because there is a temporary cessation of war that does not equate with peace! The fact is that there will never be peace for the human race until we no longer exist, because we really do not want it. Most pretend we do and make an outward show of it, but if people really did want it, then we'd already have it! The equation is very simple: Peace=being peaceful. We are not, as a race, peaceful and so any utopian dreams of universal love remain just that, a dream. We all start with the premise that it's OTHER PEOPLE that have to change and never think that perhaps WE are the ones that must do so. Politicians make their silly laws and religious leaders give us their pious nonsense, but no outward show will change YOU fundamentally as a person. As long as you cling to the absurd notions of nationality or faith, there can never be peace. As long as you think in terms of 'my' and 'mine', there can never be peace. And as these things will never change (just look at history. No reforms or revolutions have brought peace; ever.), there will be no peace. Sorry if this disillusions you, but if you look at it properly, you will see that it is the truth.

Well, peace exist in the United States today because of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Mexican War, the Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, the Cold War and so forth. Total up the cost of all those wars and loss of life and that has been the cost of peace here in the USA.
Peace is an unnatural state for mankind. It takes a great deal of force, a lot of deaths, a lot of struggle, in order to establish peace. And once peace is established, it takes a large force to maintain it. Imagine what your city or town would be like if all law enforcement were to evaporate overnight.

If we lived in Utopia then it would be free. We don't. Unfortuantley, the cost of peace is lives and budgets.

You need instead to ask " What is the cost of defending our nation and its values from fanatic psychotic thugs determined to destroy us all."

Peace can only happen when both sides want it. As long as the terrorists want us all dead, there can be no peace. It's not our choice - it's theirs.
