All dance in a way tells a story. I would suggest that ballet is the most common form of dance depicting a story.

Ballet dancing is probably the most well known form of telling stories through dance. Tribal dancing also can be a way to tell a story through dance depending on each tribe. Here all the participants are a character and each have their own dance.

Im a dancer and i believe that every dance tells a story, dances done by choreograhers are always done out of a context obviously some clearer than other. One good example of a dance that tells a story is the Car Man by Matthew Bourne.

Every dance has a story to tell. For example, in paso doble (I don't know if that's the right spelling) the man is the toreador and the woman is the scarf (no, not the bull:)). Rumba, on the other hand, is a dance of love and passion, etc. The choreography, costumes, feelings added while dancing, all make up the story.

Most dances have a story to tell however if you want something in particular why not look at DV8s website. They aren't a dance company, but physical theatre and its very similar. Physical theatre is more focussed on telling a story through movement and focusses less on the aspect of speech. DV8 specifically take events and situations and issues within the community and portray them in a interesting but very true way. Their films are available however the best one I found to look at was "Cost of A Living" It's about a disabled guy who walks on his hands and there is a fantastic sequence based inside a dance class. It;s really very moving. Hope that helps.

In Japan there is a sort of theatre called Kabuki. Kabuki began in the late 1500s with women but after the women began attracting too much male attention they were banned from performing and ever since then only male actors may perform, including the taking on of female roles. One of the "sub-sections" of Kabuki is shosa-goto or dance-drama. Kabuki usually depicts historical events or moral conflicts in love situations.

Also, in India there is a dance called Bhrata Natyam in which one woman dances and through intricate and telling movements is at times, for example, the "milkmaid" whom the god krishna chases. Then she will switch roles and be krishna. It's really quite incredible to see the story being danced out through one person.

I think every hula dance tells a story. kinda cool. Ballet usualy is used to tell a story, but it doesn't always. You can make a story out of any dance though.

Contemporary dancing is probably the most expressive dance as far as telling a story. They performed this dance style on the Fox Network's show "So You Think You Can Dance".

Here's my favorite routine. Enjoy! :)

argentine tango tells a love story. in my opinion it is the most beautiful dance in the world. it feels amazing to actually do it, but just watching it is fantastic too. it's so personal, it feels like seeing into the dancers' souls. and it's a really masculine dance. you have to be powerful and striking. the man leads the woman.
