My stepson admits to opening pop ups but not to downloading the material. We have found undesirable material downloaded onto our computers hard drive, the law is trying to accuse one of us of downloading this material so this is a serious matter. Can someone enlighten me as to how this all works? Feel free to ask any questions necessary if I haven't made clear the circumstancesof the situation well enough. Thank you!

We do have the pop up blocker that the guys at the computer store installed along with virus protectors and firewalls. I know now that more protection is needed but the information I really need is to know if it is possible that the material was an occurance that was not performed by anyone 'downloading' onto our system. Thank you one and all!

yes, opening a pop up does download unwanted files and sometimes programs as well. i am guessing the contents that is on your hard drive is porn, which it usually is. to figure out whether it was downloaded automatically via pop up, the images appear to be small. but if downloaded it will appear larger. this u will notice in your temp internet files, if you searching for cars for example, the images will be small once automatically downloaded, but if downloaded by you, it will appear much bigger. install pop-up blockers, download yahoo pop up blocker, and buy yourself a spyware program to clean your pc's unwanted downloads.

Yes opening pop ups can download unwanted files, but not all pop ups are Spyware. Spyware can come in different forms, it is advisable to have a AntiSpyware software scanning your system on a regular basis. Try Ad-Aware SE.

No I don't really think that it can...usually pop-ups automatically "pop-up", unless of course you have the pop up blocker installed or whatever. Opening a blocked pop-up however, I don't think that it will or can download unwanted files to the hard drive.

You need to add Ad-aware on your computer and run this often....these pop-ups are spyware that came from something you have logged in and accepted....and you don't want that on your computer....also be sure your pop-up blocker is clicked to be ON so as to prevent these......I run pop-up blocker, firewalls, zone alarm, virus protection and Spybot Search & Destroy...all were free.....protect yourself

pop up's can install spies into your PC to monitor your surfing habit's thus selling your IP address to spamers to send unwanted advertisment to your mailing address. And you can also pick up viruses an trojans by opening popup's. Make sure and run a good virus protection at all times. Download this great free program to help protect your PC and keep it running smoothly. http://www.iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/download.htm. Good luck. Mikie.

Not necessary. But most spyware enters into the system with some type of pop up messages when clicked.

when a popup is opened, already the bytes are transfered.
It can harm your computer, new scripts like perl are extremely dangerous since it's not an exe file but text.
install a popub blocker is better.
