Definitely dying. I suppose there was some remote possibility that it could have survived with prompt attention from rabbit paramedics, but it was really out of luck. It had brain damage, certainly, and other internal injuries. I doubt its spine would have survived the impact and the shock of being thrown off the road, so it would have been paralyzed.
Fortunately, it was in shock at the time. It was hardly, if at all, aware of its surroundings or the damage it had taken.
It could have been dead at the time you took it off the road. Beheaded rabbits twitch for a long time, and their heart keeps beating for a few minutes. It might have been a kindness to slit its throat, but I doubt it would have made a difference.
It was good of you to stop for him, even if there was nothing to be done.

Just the fact that you care is more than most people will ever do. Yes, it died quickly if it was as bad off as it must have looked. Placing it in the grass may have provided it a little bit of comfort in the end. The slow heart rate was probably the end of it too, as rabbits usually have a quick heart rate. As far as what to do if it happens again, it's a matter of judgment.

That's really all you can do, unless you have a firearm on you, or.. well I won't go into detail. I know it's sad, but unfortunately injured animals can not survive in the wild as well as domesticated animals can. So if possible it's best to just end it as quickly as possible.
At any rate, don't worry about it. You did everything you could. In this case it's best to just let nature take its course.

This sounds like a Seinfeld episode. "I thought we had a deal !!"
But seriously, alot of small country town vets will look at an animal if possible. There are also people who are not vets that will rehab wildlife.State Dept.'s of Conservation can also assist in some cases. And, yes, there are some that find wild rabbit delicious!

Well it's kind of you to stop and check.
But from the sound of it, he wasnt going to live long regardless.
Carrots are supposed to be good for the eyes, but it's not enough carrots on earth to regenerate an eye.
