I'm going to say size 10. because I just looked in my daughter's Vans and they say this:
"Mens - size 8
Womans - size 9 1/2"

I normally wear a size 9 in womens which is like a 7 in mens, so I'd want to guess that your 8 1/2 in mens might be a 10 1/2 in womens? Ask someone in the shoe department to give you a better idea.

Depending on the type of shoe, an 8 1/2 in women's would be a 6, 6 1/2 in mens.

I have a size nine in women's shoes. and a size 7 in Menes.
So a size 8 & 1/2 in mens would be 10& 1/2 in womens.
There is aproximately 2 sizes different.

An 8 1/2 in men's would be a wide size 10 in women's... assuming you're asking about US sizes.

It would be a size 10...I used to have to wear steel toed work boots at a job and could only get men's boots...they were a 7 1/2 and I take a woman's 9.

it's most of the time 2 sizes different depending on the make and structure of the shoe!
