Depends how you delete it. If you just use your browser's cleaner then there may still be traces left. Use a proper cleaner such as C cleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ will remove all traces on windows
However the DA files are still there. Technically a pro could still recover your history unless you do a complete format of your disk.
In xp go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files to have a look at what is on your comp.
Using Ccleaner (or similar) has to be done with care as it could remove saved passwords etc. There is a faq to help you on most clean up programs.
One last thing. When you clear your history using your browser tool, yahoo toolbar search does not get deleted. You can do this manually by clicking the pencil icon on the left.

When you delete browsing history, the pointers in the directory that show where the files were located are deleted, and their location is added to a list of free space. The history is actually still there, Windows just has no way of finding it. Undelete and file recovery programs could still recover the history. However as you continue to use the PC, the location of the files - since they are now considered free space - will eventually be reused to store a new file or history. Once that happens, the original history is gone for good. How soon that happens depends on how soon you PC needs the space to store another file. Could be weeks, or only minutes.

If you are trying to completely erase the tracks of where you have been, you need to do four things:
1. Delete the browsing history of your computer.
2. Delete the temporary file chache of your browser.
3. Delete the cookies created for your browser.
4. Delete any form history information as well.
Unless there is an extra application on your system tracking your site visits, you will have safely erased your tracks. Many people (including kids) will delete either the browsing history or the file cache, but will not delete cookies or form history and can be used to see where people have been going.
Each of these four items can be deleted somewhere within your web browser settings.

When you delete anything from your computer the data can still be found on the hard drive.
If you image your hard drive is actually a collection of small slices each of which can store information, when you write new data into one of these slices it is marked as being full so that no other information can be written there.
When you delete something it is not removed from the hard drive only the marker is, so that new data can be written to that section (over-writing the old information)
So in theory if you deleted something but the space was never reused to write some new information then it would never actually be deleted.
So in order to remove anything so that it can no longer be read from the hard drive you must delete it and over-write the section it was stored upon.
There are several tools which can do this for you, some can be found for free others are commercial. If you search for "secure delete" or other terms you should be able to find a suitable tool.

yes, it will stay on your PC until overwritten by other data, you can only ensure it is not retrievable by overwriting m,any times with other data, which is what these clean up programmes do, which erase all your internet searching and temp files.
