I look at news as dysfunctional programming. Like any business, money is a factor. Reporting facts has become secondary to keeping their ratings up. I rarely watch the news anymore and only laugh when the weather report comes on. Could you be wrong more than half the time and keep your job? Meteorologist can.

I think so, they want sponsors, sponsors pay them money and want to be their sponsors only if they have alot of people watching, more people tend to watch entertaining shows rather than the depressing, same as every other news station.

Its what drives all media. Fear and sensationalism sells higher ad rates. NBC (GE), ABC (Disney), CBS (Viacom), CNN (Turner), FNS (Newscorp) are profit oriented companies with many many shareholders who want a decent return on their investment.
