After losing my dog in the park I have found no large scale reliable service provided in the UK for pet owners who have lost and want to find their pets.

Does anyone know of anything that can help pet owners locate their pets?

The dogs are microchipped so that if scanned they give an ID that the RSPCA can use to phone us but I'm looking for a service like ones used to track mobile phones for your kids

We have been searching for the same thing for adults that are confused and can become easily lost. There is no good device out there yet.

GPS tracking systems are limited by power supply and antenna size. If you want the sytem to be on 24/7, it needs a BIG battery. If you want it to work in most cover conditions, it needs a BIG antenna.

A regular GPS reciever only needs to pick up signals- you need to send signals out. Even a normal GPS device is confused by tall buildings or blocked by trees, etc.- bad news for our needs!

Cell phone systems only need to communicate with the local cell towers and are only working when activated. If you could train your dog to turn it on when it is lost, a cell system would work for you!

There are some other options- like smaller radio frequency emitters and trackers, but their ranges are more limited and they are more limited in usefulness. We tried a system called Ion Kids (or something like that) that was very good, but not quite what we needed.

One place to look however is hunter's supplies- they have some trackers for thier dogs, I believe.

The microchip only holds information about the owner. To track an animal you would need a radio collar transmitting a signal to a reciever, which is how they track wild animals and also how the car GPS works. It would be possible to do it but I think it would also be expensive. A good idea though!!

My vet put a chip under my dogs skin, and gave me a code, and now, if I ever loose my dog, I will find it.Also, I have a chip that goes on their collar, that is from AVID.
