Kolkatta is perhaps one of the safest city for women in India, especially because of the women position in Bangla society. In my experience, West Bengal is more women centric then any other part of India.
But as with any other city, you need to be alert and more so if you are a woman and alien to India.

Yes it is safe but certainly not everywhere. There are some isolated spots where it is unsafe. I can compare Kolkata with New Delhi and say it is much safer than New Delhi.

Yes. It is safe. Law and order situation is better at Kolkata.
