Someone posted a set of web sites that show where you can exchange books, you could search for that Yahoo Answer.
Or, you could look at the e-books, not something you can hold in your hands, and may not be free in some cases they are.
PS - modified my answer after reading your aversion to e-books.

Well, I'm a lit. instructor and when I need to get a new book or text and I'm not sure if it's worth forking out the cold hard cash...I'll contact the publisher directly and ask for an EXAMINATION COPY. The publisher will most likely ask you from what school or institution you're calling from, but that's how I get my books for free. It can't hurt for you to try! Good luck!
