Yes, they are friends. However the references in his book are his way, as a fan of Rowling's, of paying homage to her. I thought it was nice of him.

When they met at the Radio city music hall carity event they seemed to get along very well with plenty of banter going between them. King seems to be a fan of Rowling's work and even asked Rowling not to kill off Harry. It is not known if they regulary communicate but if they do they keep it private.

I think it could also model how much a part of pop culture Harry Potter has become. In those King passage, most anyone would catch both the reference to Harry Potter and it's conotations within the work.

Thats very cheezy of steven king to use. I've read the first three books of the dark tower and partially the fourth. But didn't finish, cause the fourth got boring with the fact its basically just flashback telling. Pretty good series but started getting really farfectched ideas.

They seem to be friends on a professional sort of level. King has praised Rowlings work in the past and they have done charity functions together. Whether they are actual friends or not is only known to them.
