Why do people sit idly by as George Bush and his cronies continue to take away our rights guaranteed us by the Constitution??? This time saying he has the right to open our mail without a warrant. First, taking and arresting people without charging them for years, not being able to see a lawyer. Then the wiretapping scandal where he said he has the right to listen in on private conversations withou benefit of a warrant. Now, taking the mail and being able to look at it without benefit of a cause except what is deemed an emergency. How much more can we as a people take??

Loking at Proud American's answer it is obvious he has an opinion, but not sense enough to read the article that their is a link to in my initial question. The law passed goes for the rest of America, Bush signed a statement that he can supercede that law. This is a pefect example of what I and many have been saying most Americans read the first statement of an article and do not go any further. AS for Ms Missy your just don't get the whole picture , do you. By your thinking just to stay safe you would allow any intrusion in to your life. Well safety like that is avaliable in Russia, China and any other dictartorship. It isn'tsupposed to be in America.

The President of the USA is not above the Constitution, nor above the laws of the land. He is OUR employee, not our Messiah... not our King... not our dictator as he would like to believe...! If he is allowed to continue trying to put his personal interests and his personal agenda above the Constitution and above our laws... he is going to find himself in a worse position than Tricky Dicky (Nixon)!
What's to prevent him, or anyone for that matter, from spying on candidates from the opposing political party? It isn't a matter of "if you have nothing to hide" mentality that gives him the licence to forego our Constitutional rights, liberties and freedoms. It is a matter of obeying and not circumventing the laws of the land simply because he's the President... if he were NOT the President, he'd be stuttering himself into a coma!
He's really toying with disaster! He can't do something legally, so he proceeds to do it ILLEGALLY by sneaking that in on us? Is he insane...?!!! What's next mind control? Are we headed in the direction of George Orwell's supposed utopian society in "1984" or are we returning to the McCarthyism of the 50s? What's to differentiate the USA from facist countries?
HOW would you like it if some government agent went into your home, went into your wife's or daughter's drawers and looked around her underwear and other personal garments...? I mean, after all... since you supposedly have "nothing to hide"... how would you like it if some government agent went through your mom's drawers and looked at her personal things... after all she nor you "have nothing to hide"?
It isn't a matter or whether or not you have something to hide but an issue of YOU and EVERYONE ELSE having the right to privacy and not having any government agent invade your privacy!
Be informed. Read. To those with the "if you have nothing to hide" mentality, read this and LEARN:
Amendment IV (Constitution of the United States of America)
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
TITLE 18, PART I, CHAPTER 13, Sec. 242. (Civil Rights)
Sec. 242. - Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law
"Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or to different punishments, pains, or penalties, on account of such person being an alien, or by reason of his color, or race, than are prescribed for the punishment of citizens, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include the use, attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or fire, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death."
These are some of the laws we live by here in the good ol' US of A, the same laws that guarantees us our freedoms, rights and liberties and also guarantees that we not live in fear, the same laws that make this nation better than many others! Without our laws, we are no better than our enemies! NO ONE, not even the President (Dubya), IS ABOVE THE LAWS OF THIS LAND AND NO ONE IS ABOVE OUR CONSTITUTION, and that includes Dubya and his cronies! Otherwise, what the hell do we have the Constitution for?

All I know is that conservatives will be the ones flipping over this very same rule if Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, or Barack Osama become President. One of these days there won't be a right wing President in the White House. So laugh while you can, Republicans. This sets a precedent, and they'll be looking through YOUR mail next!

The System is broken.
Who would I rather have scheming for our well being in World Economics (and therefore, everything else). ?
You or GB2 ? I will always take the Oil Baron, Land Raper, Robber Barron who is not likely to give the dubious the benefit of the doubt.
What would you have done ? Run us to ruin no doubt. The world is not a wonderful place, it is a Cold Harsh Brutish Wasteland, and we must continue to be the Meanest Drunk on the Block.

I do not feel threatened by the government tapping my phones or opening my mail- I have nothing to hide.
I also believe that the safety of every American citizen outweighs any rights to private communications I may have.
I also think we have been monitored for several years by our own government (that is how intelligence is gathered) .
This government snooping has gone on for years, remember the McCarthy era and that was 50 years ago.
The only thing different now is the government is wasting it's time legitimizing tactics that have been in practice covertly for decades. And now that the American people have heard about it, we are outraged. The old adage "What you don't know can't hurt you" really applies in this scenario.

Do not be afraid of George Bush doing this. Be afraid of the next president and after that. George Bush has low approval ratings (for right now at least) and he is being watched by the media and many of the liberals. I am more afraid of an american darling president having this power. High approval ratings, media in love with, trusted too much by us.

Postal Vice President Tom Day said: "As has been the long-standing practice, first-class mail is protected from unreasonable search and seizure when in postal custody. Nothing in the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act changes this protection. The president is not exerting any new authority."
Kinda shoots your theory doesn't it.

We would actually have to catch the government opening the mail of someone who had no conceivable connection to terrorism, someone whose mail was obviously being opened for political reason's. Like Hillary Clinton for example. It would be another Watergate. Then, the scandal would open people's eyes to how the government can abuse this right.

Evidently Mr. Bush feels that he can change the constitution whenever he feels the need to do so. We need to write letters to our congressmen objecting to this. I dont quite understand how he can do this either and have us find out about it after the fact. But then again you can thank the idiots who voted this moron into our presidency.

isn't he special, the most criminal and corrupt president in my lifetime and I turned 61 today, I have seen some crooked ones, Reagan, Nixon, Bush sr. But when the supreme court appointed him I knew we were in for trouble. He has set America back many years with his disregard for human and individual rights.
