I feel that banking is the better sector as it is more dynamic and can include insurance too.

It depends on if you are a college grad and where you live. If you are in a small-ish city with only local banks, I think that banking would be terribly boring... job titles include bank teller, loan advisor and bank manager. In a bigger city where a big bank is headquartered would provide an endless stream of options... small bank, small opportunity... big bank big opportunity. College grads with finance, accounting and management degrees will have plenty of options.

Same idea as above on insurance... corporate offices of insurance companies provide more variety than in cities of >200k. Small town, you can be in insurance sales, an adjuster (how much is your claim worth), an actuary (how much do you pay), customer service, marketing or manage teams of people doing any of the above.

I would offer that both provide an opportunity to evolve if you have the right qualifications initially and the drive to evolve your career. If you are from a small town and insist on staying, obviously your career can only evolve to the types of work done in your small town. Bigger cities provide more access to all types of jobs....

Bottom line though is you.... you drive the evolution opportunity in your life.

depends what your goals are. If you're looking for a clerical position with a corporation, consumer banking might be more interesting. on the other hand, if you're a degreed professional, commercial banking or insurance might suit you better. consider some alternatives such as GMAC or GE Capital. these are parts of larger corporations but they specialize in lending and leasing to both consumers and commercial clients.
