10 Gauge Wire Diameter

2016-09-30 00:57:24 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

In American Wire Gauge (AWG), the diameter of 10 gauge electrically conducting wire is widely regarded as 0.102 inch - rounded up from 0.1019”, which is rounded up from 0.10189” - which is no doubt rounded up from something else.

So, that goes for 10 gauge wire mesh, too? Well, not really. According to the folks at Woven Wire Cloth Sales, who sell wire mesh, or in trade lingo, wire cloth for a living, lay persons who are unfamiliar with the wacky ways of woven wire cloth often become quickly confused when discussing the product in terms of gauge numbers. This is due in no small part to a diverse variety of methods for denoting the gauges for a dizzying range of product design specifications, weave styles, and materials.

Once you have chosen your particular Bolting Cloth, Filter Cloth, Fine Mesh Cloth, Market Grade Cloth, Mill Grade Cloth, Industrial Hardware Cloth, Space Cloth (from which Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s uniform is made, one would assume), you are certainly free to specify 10 gauge thickness. That specification, however, will result in one of the following four actual wire diameters:

.1350" (Washburn & Moen)
.1280" (British Imperial Standard or S.W.G.)
.1340" (Birmingham or Stubs)
.1018" (American Wire Gauge or Brown & Sharpe)

The folks at Woven Wire Cloth Sales post some comments well worth reading regarding this perplexing dilemma, but the text is copyrighted so I cannot quote it directly. In a nutshell, they pretty much say that when talking about wire cloth or wire mesh it is preferable to state the exact dimensions in decimal fractions of an inch (or millimeters) than to risk monkeying around with arbitrary gauge numbers. Hope this helps.

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/ax1Jc

Unless you're talking 300 lineal feet, use the #12. If the circuit is really 300' long, use the #10 to the first 200', then the #12.
