People below the Mason-Dixon line treat college football as religion, only with more passion. I would like to know why.

That's a good question. Many fans think they love football and have been around great atmospheres until they go to a game in the south. I always love to watch teams and fans from other teams like California this year walk into Neyland Stadium(Tennessee). You can see them looking around and dumb founded. When I talk to the fans they can't believe the atmosphere down here. I even heard more than one Cal fan say that Southern Cal doesn't have anything on the atmosphere at Tennessee.

Maybe it is because the before mentioned popularity of High School football and watching them grow and get better. Maybe it's because we like to cook and be with our friends and family while tailgating. Maybe it's because the tradition so many schools have in the south.

I don't know why people want to keep bringing up a few schools somewhere else in the country. Yeah, they may be great atmospheres but the question was taking the south as a whole and there are more beloved teams in the south with regular attendance over 90,000 than anywhere else. Tennessee has 107,000, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Alabama, Auburn all have over 85,000 seat stadiums.

There is tremendous fan interest at the high school level and college fans in the South follow the progress of players. Also, generally speaking most good players attend a college in their home state or in the region. Most players give a reason that they want their family to be able to see them play. Tail-gating is also an art form down in the South. So, on game day it is a family and friend get-together. This is not only true for the home team but the visiting team as well when it is a in-conference contest.
I'll never forget when USC played LSU in an NCAA regional baseball contest (note LSU is rare in fan support in that they make money in football, basketball and baseball) and after USC's loss a sports reporter went to visit the USC bus to get a few sound bites before they took off. Well, only the driver was there because all the USC players were enjoying some good ol' southern cooking with LSU tail-gaters. Sports is a family event down here in the South and not just for football but almost all sports.

True college football is very popular in the South but look at Michigan they sell out every home game 100,000 plus per game.College football in general to me is easier to be loyal to than lets say pro football with free agency you can no longer associate with a pro team, players are there today gone tomarow ,with college football the atmosphere is incredible and the rivalries between schools is what makes the college game so great,i.e. Alabama-Auburn, Florida-Florida State,so to answer your question I think the popularity of college football is about the same nationwide.Born and raised in the South!!!!

I imagine it's because for years the South had no professional teams thus became very attached to college sports. It's very much like people who live in Nebraska or Oklahoma, no pro teams so college football is #1. In many of the remote areas of the country high school sports are very important because of no access to pro or college. But, as has been pointed out previously, there are fanatic fans throughout the U.S. of A.

I think that the NFL and NCAAF is bigger in the South. Yes, GB and Pitt tend to have a better overall record, but look at the atmosphere. NO, Hou, Dal, Atl, even Mia.

College football is big in the south because they don't know how to play a real sport like hockey.

Most of the fans have watched these players since high school so they followed them to the college level and feel a loyalty to them and the school of their choice.
