It can damage electrics and some seals. Why do you need to do it,i know most people would like to the see the engine bay in its original state when buying,as you can see if the engine has had any leaks.Personally i would not buy a car who`s engine bay had been steam cleaned,as the old alarm bells would start ringing!

Does steam cleaning a car engine damage it?

When I decided to sell my 1968 VW beetle I got the engine steam cleaned so it would look fantastic for viewings. Two minutes after setting off on my next journey the car conked out and I had to call out the AA. However, this was over ten years ago so I'm sure things have improved since then (or perhaps the guy who cleaned it didn't know what he was doing!?)

If I was thinking of buying a car and found the engine had been steam cleaned, my nasty suspicious mind would make me wonder what the vendor was trying to hide.

If done by an expert it shouldn't cause any harm as they'll know how to avoid the electronics etc.

Hi,
Not at all in my expereince. Just removes all the oily grime & whatnot. As long as the ignition system is propery fixed together, so no water ingress, which you would get from wet roads anyway, there shouldn't be a problem.
Deisels - absolutully don't worry.
My boat has one once a year, and apart from sticking the bilge pump on for a bit, all is well.
Just a nice shiny engine !
As for bodywork & wheels , most cars will take it nicely with their multiple layers of paint.
Just don't turn the thing up to "flat-out"!
It could remove loose bits under extreme pressure - but that in itself is OK, as it will point out the dodgy bits in need ot repair.
Cheers,
Bob.

It is not reccomended to steam clean a modern vehicle engines due to the complex electronic components that are fitted to it as this can cause expensive damage to the ecu and the other components that run the engine

Not when done by experts. I have previously had the engine of a classic car steam cleaned by a local company and it looked fab!

As long as you cover the components that should not have high pressure steam applied directly, no problem. You wouldn't want to hit the distributor with steam for example.
