At this point I'm going to assume that you know what stem cells are and focus on your specific questions. The people who work on stem cell research feel that if they can learn how to control the differentiation process they can direct a stem cell to be anything that is needed. This is critical to people who suffer from degenerative diseases or degenerative tissue injuries. Obviously organ transplant recipients would benefit greatly, but stem cells could also lead to treatments and/or cures for Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, burns and spinal cord injuries according to the National Institute of Health.

Anyone who may need an organ transplant in the future. Stem cells are good for making replacement organs.
