There is basically a battery, and clock circuit inside the cabinet on the motherboard. The battery is not just to keep the settings you have chosen in memory, but also to run the clock. The computer will update the time every time you turn it on, and go onto the net, assuming that you have internet access. If thebattery runs down, you will need to replace it, and reset your options for the computer to run with the options you have selected. It have a small battery on the mother board. It supplies power to the system clock which is uilt up on the same mother board.
You may have experienced wrong date, when this battery goes down.

If you would open your case most computer have a cmos battery or a batter that keeps track of time and computer settings that allow the computer to always start up and have correct time when this batter goes out it can be very harmful to your computer.
