to achieve this using xp.
goto control panel > display settings
click dekstop tab
then the customize desktop button.
you now see the my computer icon of which you can change

first place a shortcut of my computer on the desktop fromt he start menu.next right click the my computer icon.select the properties option.then select the short cut tab. click the change icon button. select any one of the provided icons.or browse for icon files and click ok.the icon of my computer will be changed

Go to start menu.
Click control panel.
Click on display
Click desktop
Down on the bottom left hand side click on customize desktop.
If you want more icons and you are using MS you can download themes, some are free. Some are not
